Samantha Murray, Olympic Silver Medalist, Modern Pentathlon. Bath, November 2014
When I look back on 2014, my first feelings are of amazement and gratitude for how lucky I have been. I started 2014 in Los Angeles, and over the course of the year, visited 5 countries I hadn't explored before: India, Greece, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. It has undoubtedly been my best year yet for travel. Experiencing so many different cultures and sights has been truly enriching on both a personal level and as a photographer. Once you get the travel bug you just can't shake it - let's see where 2015 takes me and my camera!
Reflecting on my year, I draw a line on a piece of paper. One side has a tick for the positives, the other a cross for the negatives.
When you set yourself big enough goals, you undoubtedly run the risk of not quite attaining them all. After all, if you achieve them all, they were perhaps not ambitious enough! On the side with the cross, my illegible scribbling focuses on a few jobs that I missed and the speed that my photography is developing being slightly slower than I'd like.
However, right after I've jotted down these pitfalls, I think long and hard about what I've done this year that I am proud of, and the successes I am thankful for...
I have had the pleasure of photographing some really top athletes this year: the England Netball Team, Samantha Murray (London 2012 Modern Pentathlon Silver Medalist), and Lewis Prosser, who represented Wales Hockey at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Another highlight has to be working in tandem with RKCR/Y&R on their campaign for the Volvic/Tough Mudder partnership, which was very widely published, appearing in such publications as FHM, Time Out, Heat, The Evening Standard, Metro, City AM and Stylist.
Despite missing out on a few jobs this year, words cannot describe how simply being considered to shoot for such great brands serves as immense motivation for me going into 2015. What's more, I feel I am getting ever closer to developing my own personal style of photography and becoming the photographer I want to be - bringing the ideas I have in my mind to life, whether it be on pixels on in print.
I'm entering the new year with confidence, drive and excitement, and can't wait to hit the ground running. Bring on 2015!
